Propecia contains a medicine called finasteride.

Propecia is used for the treatment of male pattern baldness (also called androgenetic alopecia). If you have any questions after reading this information leaflet related to finasteride and male hair loss then please contact your doctor.

Male pattern baldness occurs in many men. The current state of science assumes that this type of hair loss is caused by genetic factors and a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (abbreviated as DHT). This hormone has a negative effect on the hair which causes the growth cycle to shorten and the hairs to become thinner.

Through the use of Propecia, finasteride in the scalp will lower the concentrations of the DHT hormone. It does this by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase type 2, which is present in the scalp, and which is responsible for the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Propecia works in most cases, only in men who are in the early or middle stage of hair loss; it will slow their hair loss. In half of these men also an improvement of their hair loss will occur.
